So hopefully by now you have made a friend on Facebook - ME! Did you get a chance to take a look at my profile? Did you do anything with yours? I am not going to spend any time here teaching you how to update your profile, so here is the Facebook Help Page on that topic in case you need it. The Help icon for Facebook is in the lower right corner of every Facebook page. They have a GREAT Help Section. Take a few minutes and poke around on my profile, if you haven't done so already. Get to know the various pages. Write on my Wall, Become a Fan of my Cirkla Page, look at my groups. Feel free to USE ME as your experimental friend. I don't mind. If you want to know how to update something on your page, just use the Facebook Help. Particularly, check out my Info page. This page contains some very valuable information about who I am and what I am about. One of the reasons that Facebook is such a great tool for developing your business leads is because it offers you so much information about the person. In the healing arts business in particular, trust is a very important factor. Take some time to get to know your friends and send them a message. There is a "Send a Message" link right under their photo. Now that you have seen my page, it is time to make some new friends. Do you still have that keyword list? If not, jot down a few interests that your clients might have in relation to your business. You will notice in the upper right corner of the Facebook page, there is a search bar. In that bar, type one of your keyword phrases. Remember the Bead Shop example from the previous article? In that case, you might enter "jewelry making" in the search field. When you do this, what should come up is a list of groups. Facebook supplies you with some groups that match your geographical area, if any are available. You can tell which ones fit your geographical area because they say "Network: Your City/Region". (It is important that you enter location information about yourself into your Facebook Profile for this to work.) If your business has only a local market, stick to the groups that fall inside your network. You may also notice that there is a "Type: Common Interest" link under each group. This helps you to identify how Facebook categorizes your interests and that is important information for this project. If you click on that link it will take you to all OTHER groups that fit that description as well. When you find a group that matches the interests of your customers, click into the group and you will see its members. Pick a group with plenty of members to start with. In the upper right corner of that group, there is a "Join this Group" link. Click on that to join the group. Most groups are easy to join and do not require any special passwords or secret handshakes. A "group" is just a listing of people with similar interests. Now that you have joined a group, it is time to make some new friends! Finally! If you scroll through the Group Page, you will notice an area that says "Members". Under that header, to the right, there is a "See All" link. Click on the "See All" link and it expands the list of members. Is there anyone in there that you know? If you have been in business a while in your local area, you may be surprised to find that you actually recognise some of these names. If not, click on the "Add as Friend" link to a few of them and be sure and include a personal message stating what you are doing. Example, "I found your profile on the Jewelry Making group and wanted to connect. I own the XYZ Bead Shop in Minneapolis." As I mentioned in the previous article, try and make your intentions clear when you are making friends on Facebook. Some people use it for business, some use it purely for friendship and some both. If your business interests them, they will probably connect but don't take it personally if they don't. They may be one of the people that just wants to limit their Facebook friends to personal acquaintances. Well, that should keep you busy for a while. Check back again for more articles on Facebook to come.
